Their artistic styles are similar with rougher collage illustrations that are beautiful in their simplicity and use of texture. The author was a contemporary of Eric Carle, but began publishing before Carle. They are done in collage style with layered shapes and add to the story rather than take away. The illustrations are also wonderful in their simplicity. The story is lovely and speaks to the theme of what is important and valuable in our lives. He gather colors and words and light inside himself and we see that he doesn’t hoard them, but freely shares them with his family. He seems to be looking for something deeper than merely existing. Once winter has come the family eventually goes through most of their food and tangible supplies and then they turn to Frederick to see them through the dark and lonely winter.įrederick is a philosophical mouse and seems to be searching for the meaning of life in this story about his family’s preparations for and life during the winter. Frederick gathers things like sunlight and colors and words for the long cold winter. At first his family is exasperated because they think he isn’t working, but he insists he is and they soon grow intrigued by their somewhat strange family member.

Instead, Frederick is gathering other supplies that he believes will be valuable over the winter. Frederick’s family gather food and straw while Frederick doesn’t seem to do any work to help them. Frederick and his family of field mice are gathering supplies for the long winter months.
